SYNDICATED COLUMNIST ASSERTS THAT MRS. CLINTON'S "BRAND OF RELIGION" IS TYPICAL OF LIBERAL [APOSTATE] FAITHS

In an article that appeared in the Lewiston, ME Sun Journal on 7-13-2007 (A8), the noted syndicated columnist Cal Thomas analyzed a recent interview that the New York Times [NYT] conducted with Dem. Presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton. In his article, Thomas observed that Mrs. Clinton's religious beliefs closely resemble those Protestant denominations that promote the "social gospel" and a human works based salvation concept.

According to the NYT, Mrs. Clinton now makes frequent references to her faith, "carries a Bible on her campaign travels" and "reads commentaries on Scripture and on other people's 'faith journeys.'" Conservative bloggers, however, have been alleging that Mrs. Clinton's professions of faith a "a little too convenient," "a little too timely," and "a little two scripted."

The NYT interview stated that Mrs. Clinton endorses the "liberal leaning brand of Methodism" that "places a brand on social activism," but "tends to be reticent about discussing personal piety." In his article, Thomas noted that the liberal type of faith which Mrs. Clinton espouses "discounts the authority of Scripture in favor of a constantly evolving poll-tested relevancy to modern concerns such as the environment…larger govt. programs" and other "societal…efforts." According to Thomas, who himself is a theological evangelical conservative, such an emphasis "jettisons the life-changing message of salvation, forgiveness of sins and a transformed life."

In discussing Mrs. Clinton's liberal-leaning Methodist background as a young person, the NYT article quoted her former youth pastor, Donald Jones who stated about his ministry to the youth of Mrs. Clinton's high school group that He "wouldn't have focused so much on personal salvation," but "have focused more on social responsibility," an emphasis that helps explain the historical background of Mrs. Clinton’s left-wing social views.

In a brief theological quiz on her beliefs, Mrs. Clinton claimed

that "she believed in the resurrection of Jesus." However, "she described herself as less sure of the doctrine that being a Christian is the only way of salvation." Thomas aptly observed that Mrs. Clinton's views directly contradicted the statements of Christ in John 14:6.

Thomas also asserted that concerning the "accuracy of Scripture," Mrs. Clinton "serves up theological mush." Mrs. Clinton declared that "people who try to shoehorn in their cultural and social understanding of the time into the Bible might be actually missing the larger point." Thomas declared that Mrs. Clinton’s comments "precisely" summarize the "liberal Christianity to which" she "subscribes."

Thomas concluded his article by saying that "Sen. Clinton is entitled to whatever faith she wants to practice, but when she uses it as an election tactic, she should not be allowed to alter classic Christianity," a perceptive analysis with which the F.D. editor heartily concurs.
