Interim "Crystal Cathedral" Pastor Rejects Finality of Biblical Scriptures and Denies There is a "Biblical Model" for "Church Structure"

The "Crystal Cathedral" [CC] ministry where Robert H. Schuller Sr. served for more than 50 years is undergoing a structural re-organization under the basic control of the Reformed Church of America [RCA], the denomination with which its former longtime pastor and church have been associated since its beginning. The re-organization is under the direction of Rick Mysse, "a denominational executive for the RCA,"

ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES

Schuller was noted for his unbiblical "Theology of Self-Esteem," with its denial of depravity and sin and his Norman Vincent Peale version of the "power of positive thinking." After Schuller retired, he turned over the Cathedral ministry to his son, Robert A. Schuller. Under his son's administrative control, however, both the church and the TV ministry experienced a gradual financial and numerical decline.

Due to severe differences of administrative outlook, Schuller Sr. fired his son. Admidst the confusing atmosphere, the CC ministry has come under the operational control of the RCA, with Rick Mysee, the "executive director of the Far West Classis of the RCA," taking responsibility for the church's "oversight."

Juan Carlos Ortiz, a well-known Hispanic preacher, is now serving as the "interim senior pastor" of the CC ministry. Ortiz is a Charismatic who believes in the subsequent "baptism in the Spirit" experience and in speaking in tongues, also holds heretical views concerning the Scriptures.

HERETICAL STATEMENTS

In an interview in the now defunct Logos magazine in the Jan./Feb. 1980 issue, Ortiz stated: "We act as if Jesus Christ said, I'm going to leave you with a book, I want you to do what the Book says, take your doctrine from the Book and try to live by the Book until I come back.' This is really the way many churches behave. But I find in this a problem…. In our case, Christ never intended to start a religion based on a book."

Ortiz continued his heretical views when he further declared: "…I believe in a continuing revelation. I say the Book of Acts is not finished… .I believe God still speaks today. He can enlarge on the written Word."

In another interview in the Wittenburg Door (Aug.-Sept. 1980), Ortiz was asked about his "concept of church structure?" Ortiz's absurd reply was "I don't believe there is a Biblical model for church structure…We have to ask the Spirit today how meet the needs of today."

Ortiz's views stand in stark contrast to the Apostle Paul's beliefs stated in II Tim. 3:16-17 where he unhesitatingly declared that the verbally inspired Scripture is sufficient for the spiritual maturation of the believer. While they claim to be conservative evangelicals, Ortiz and Schuller are unscriptural heretics whose ministry and views must be rejected by genuine Bible-believers—Eph. 5:7 & 11.
